Can it be understood in five seconds?

There is an idea that has stayed with me for years.
And the more time passes, the truer it seems.

The strongest effects are not always the most complex.
More often than not, they are the clearest.

Because when the audience completely understands what should have happened…
they also completely understand that it didn’t.

They don’t need explanations.
They don’t need to follow a complicated story.
They don’t need to remember ten different conditions.

They simply know that something impossible has occurred.

That’s why some classics are still alive decades later.
Not because they are old.
But because they are transparent.

The spectator sees a situation.
Understands the rules.
And when those rules are broken, the reaction comes naturally.

It’s a lesson I try to remember whenever I see a new effect.
Before asking myself whether an effect is clever, I ask something else:
«Can it be understood in five seconds?»

Because if the answer is yes, it’s usually worth paying attention to.

This week, something arrived in the shop that made me think about exactly that.

I’ll leave it here in case you’d like to take a look with that idea in mind:

That’s all.

Just a small reflection that reminds me that sometimes the most powerful magic isn’t the one with the most layers.

It’s the one that needs no explanation at all.

Best wishes,
