The reaction usually comes one second later.
There’s a moment that many magicians unknowingly interrupt.
And, curiously, it’s often the best moment of the entire routine.
It happens right after the impossible occurs.
The spectator is still processing what they’ve just seen.
They look up.
They search for an explanation.
They glance at the person next to them.
And then…
the reaction begins.
But many magicians do something before that happens.
We speak.
We pick up another object.
We explain the next step.
Or we simply move on.
And unwittingly, we steal a moment that belonged to the audience.
Over time, I discovered that the best reactions don’t appear exactly when the effect occurs.
They usually arrive a second later.
That brief silence is where wonder is born.
It’s the moment when the magic truly takes hold in the spectator’s mind.
Since then, I try to remind myself of one very simple thing:
When the miracle happens… wait.
Don’t rush to continue.
Let the audience reach it.
Because that second of patience can be worth more than any technique.
This week, an effect arrived at the shop that made me think precisely of that moment.
